September is behind us, and the leaves are changing. Next up, Halloween! My favorite candy is Reese's Peanut butter cups, for anyone who was wondering. Here is the latest happenings in Room 130...
Language The students are learning all about the most important part of a story, which include characters, setting and events within the plot. We will be reading books all week and holding discussions asking important questions about these story elements. Writer's Workshop First off, we will be using our language lessons to help us stretch out our stories by incorporating those three big story elements within their small moment stories. We will also learn some new spelling strategies that include using our word wall as a resource. Math This week we will start looking at subtraction and how we can solve problems using pictures, drawings and equations. We have been learning some new math games as well. Earlier this week I sent home some helpful addition flash cards for you to use with your child. Social Studies School helpers will be our focus this week. We will be learning about the role of teacher, principal, secretary, custodian, and even nurse and librarian. Groups will be formed and a group helper role will be assigned for them to brainstorm questions to ask and then a quick interview will take place with Middleton's own answering (hopefully)... Miscellaneous -Raz-kids: I see that many of your children are already playing and learning from this great website. If you have not yet logged on and had your child start playing, please do so soon. -IXL: I sent out paperwork yesterday about how to log on to this math website. First off, I know the username and especially the passwords are looooong. I've talked with our technology department, and they told me that that is the way it is on IXL's end. Can't change it. However, these will be the same login/pswd's they will have throughout their career in the district, all the way through 8th grade. We will be using this site in the near future in the classroom.

What a beautiful week we are having! Summer clings on, and that is fine with me. The students are getting into the groove, and getting to work.
Language The class is diving in to compare/contrast, and similarities/differences this week. I'll be reading three versions of the same story and the students will have to help find what is the same and different between the books. Later this week I will introduce word work to our independent Daily 5 activities too. Writer's Workshop This week we will learn about how to revise our small moment stories, and how to answer who, what, where, when and how questions to make our stories even better. I introduced a graphic organizer for those who need extra help formulating ideas and to aid in pre-planning their stories. Math We are continuing with addition throughout the week, and learning new strategies to solve problems including counting up. We will also create and solve simple addition word problems, and learn a couple of new games too. Dominoes and dice will be featured. Social Studies What is a citizen? What makes us a citizen of our school, community, and country? We'll talk about this throughout the week. Also, we will be doing a few autumn projects and watch a video or two about our changing season. Miscellaneous -Please don't forget to send Library books home by Monday morning so your child can check out two new books that afternoon. - We are collecting box tops and pop tabs in our classroom this year. Please start collecting and sending them with your child to help fill our bucket. The class with the most at the end of the year will be given a pizza party (and we know how much they all love pizza). Thanks! - The Middleton Weekly will start to only come home on Friday's if you elected to have a paper copy sent home. At the moment, only four families have opted for the paper version. The Weekly is available through the moodle and put into parent portal email account. So just a heads up. -The International Fest is at McCracken this Saturday from 1-4. Come on out! ~ Mr. Layes Today is an historic day. We mark the start of our first blog post. I will be posting on a weekly basis (if not more often), on the happenings in Room 130. Complete with pictures, resources, and curriculum being taught that week. Keep reading to learn more...
Language - This week we will be focusing on learning more about how to compare and contrast text and learn more about community. We will be reading some great books and discussing similarities and differences within the text. Writer's Workshop - The lessons covered this week include learning how to plan before you write narratives or 'small moment stories'. Good writers touch, tell, sketch then write. Math - We will be finishing up our first unit of math this week, and begin another later this week. Unit 2 will emphasize and learn new strategies for addition and subtraction. Social Studies - Sharing our family photos and asking meaningful questions of the person in the photo has dominated our time. The students really enjoy looking at the pictures, and we're learning not only about students in Room 130, but also about their family. Miscellaneous - We had our first fire drill this week, and the students did a great job getting out of the building in a safe, quiet and timely fashion. I was very proud of the job they did and how they took this responsibility very seriously. |
