Is it just me, or is it too cold not to have snow? Is this global warming? Who knows, but what I do know is that the kids are desperate for some snow. Me too! And go Falcons, please don't let Brady and the Patriots win another Super Bowl (sorry Boston fans). Here's the latest...
Math This week, we will be wrapping up our unit on measurement and data. We will review on Tuesday, assess on Wednesday, and begin our new unit on Geometry later in the week. To design and create the most functional cup/string telephone to use for three people. We will conduct tests with different types of cups and strings to see which design works the best. Language This week will be dedicated to reading and learning all about Ezra Jack Keats. We will read several of his books, and learn more about the great author and what it takes to create great children's literature. We will infer characters' actions and feelings and compare/contrast between different books. Word Work We are still in the thick of long vowel variations. Long vowel -e combination 'ea'. Spelling words: beach, teacher, team, please, easy, leaf Word wall words: one, two, four, five, six (review three) Writer's Workshop A new unit of study will begin this week: opinion writing! Math This week will culminate in 5 lessons that will just about wrap up Module 3. The students will continue to measure various things using centimeter cubes, rulers and paper clips. We will emphasize the use of the same unit of measurement (no mixing), lining up endpoints, and have no gaps. They will compare and contrast measurement story problems too. Later in the week, we will dive into data interpretation. Here are the standards for this week: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.B.4 Science/Social Studies We will continue our study of sound waves by reading several books and watching another video. Students will begin experiments, building and designing their own sounds on Wednesday. Later in the week we will learn all about the Chinese New Year. We will have a surprise guest come in to tell more about this holiday on Thursday and do a fun lantern activity too. Language To begin the week, groups will be rehearsing and performing a simple Reader's Theatre for Chicken Little. This will help build their fluency and public speaking overall. Then, I'm excited for the remaining two weeks to be doing an author's study on Ezra Jack Keats. We will be reading a selection of his stories including Whistle for Willie and Peter's Chair. We will continue to look at cause/effect, inferencing and sequencing. Word Work Spelling words: teeth, tree, queen, sheep, green, peek Word wall words: blue, green, yellow, three, going, sleep Writer's Workshop We extended our unit on personal narratives by one week (a fair amount of testing in the afternoons has pushed this back), so we will be finally finishing up this week. Tomorrow, Friday the 20th, is another Spirit Day. Students can come to school wearing their favorite sports outfits including jerseys, hats, and other attire (no cleats). Please leave the props at home though. I predicts Cubs gear will be a favorite. Reading logs Last week I received about 2/3 of the reading logs from students. I know it was the first week after a break, but this is their only homework. All students are makign progress, but please don't let up. They need to read and fill out their reading log on a nightly basis. Please!?! Read to Succeed For those of you who are continuing to accumulate reading time in order to earn a free pass to Six Flags, you have about another 5 weeks to complete the 6 hours. March 1st is the official due date, but I need to get them in a few days earlier. Keep on reading! That is all for now. ~Mr. Layes I slipped on my front stoop this morning. There is nothing I really despise worse than freezing rain. Ugh. Stop vacillating and just rain or snow please. Here's the latest...
Math We are diving in to measurement these days. We will introduce centimeter cubes and rulers later this week. A focus will be put upon how to line up endpoints, and have no spacing between cubes to get an accurate measurement. Please be on the lookout for two Math News-letters coming home this week for more information. Science Sound is the name of the game this week, and we'll do some fun experiments involving vibrations. We completed a Mystery Science course last week where students were able to create funny sounds using their bodies and rulers to provide sound for a cartoon online. This week, kazoo's! Language Henny Penny, and all other iterations are still discussed this week. We are looking at cause/effect, inferencing character motivation/emotion and learning how to retell a story.
