Math Students will begin a new unit this week. We will focus our attention on place value with numbers up to 40. We will learna and use comparison symbols as well. Please see the Math News coming home on Monday. Additionally, please send in any clean empty paper towel tubes in to school for our math scroll activity that we will start this week (we need another dozen to be able to start). Here are the standards that we will be covering for this unit. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.B.2 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.B.3 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.C.4 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.C.5 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.C.6 Science After reading several books on light, we will start our investigations into light and shadows this week. Students will be put into groups of four and use shapes and flashlights and experiment with shadows. We will learn important words such as transparent, translucent and opaque. Language We will continue to look at informational text and the special features it contains within. We will read all about elephants and harbor seals this week and compare these books to other folk tale/fiction stories. Word Work Spelling words: sigh, high, might, night, fight, bright Word wall words: know, right, any, pretty, every, only Writer's Workshop Our first leg of our opinion papers is finished. Next up, TV and/or movie reviews! Miscellaneous -This Friday, March 3rd is an institute day for the entire district. Please don't send your kids to school. Additionally, we are taking the following Monday off for Pulaski Day. Same rules apply. -Second trimester grades will be send home on Friday, March 17th. FYI. -Our only March birthday will be Caroline Cottrell on the 15th. Yay! -Another thank you to those of you who donated money or supplies to our classroom. Thanks to all of those parents who came out for conferences last week. If you were not able to meet with me, please contact me and we can schedule another time to talk. I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful spring-like weather. Here's the latest...
Math We will be learning all about clocks and telling time this week. Students will learn how to tell time to the hour and half hour on both analog and digital clocks. We created individual clocks last week that we will use daily. We will review and assess for Module 5 on Friday. Next up, more place value. Science/Social Studies We wrapped up the portion of our waves unit on sound last week. The cup/string telephone design/build was a huge success. The kids really enjoyed going through the design process (even with the myraid of frustrations that come up). We will begin introducing light waves this week. Additionally, February 17th is National Random Acts of Kindness Day so we will take Tuesday to watch a few videos and discuss what a person can do to put a smile on someone else's face. Language Students will continue to learn more about informational text this week. We will highlight the rainforest and the animals that live in this habitat. We will do a fun craft as well. Word work Spelling words: fly, why, dry, pie, tie, lie Word wall words: by, try, ran, must, from, old Writer's Workshop The student's will dive back into opinion writing this week. Counter arguments, and bolstering our reasoning will conclude the week. We will finish up our collection component and begin our TV/movie reviews next week. Miscellaneous -Seth Sanchez with be turning 7 on Monday, and we will celebrate on Tuesday! -This is the final week that I will be accepting Read to Succeed reading logs. If you have been diligently reading your six extra hours to earn a free pass to Six Flags, send it in this week. I will submit all entries on Friday. Congratulations to Theo, Yousef, Simon and Stephen so far. -Please save and bring in all empty and clean paper towel rolls. We will begin our math scrolls next week. Math We began a new topic in our module that pertains to equal parts. Students will build, draw and write shapes with equal parts all week (tangrams and pattern blocks will be utilized). Telling time starts on Thursday. Science Students will begin working in groups of three this week to design and build a 3-way cup/string telelphone. Next week we will begin with our light portion of the waves unit. Language Our new unit takes us back to learning more about non-fiction, informational text and the features within (headings, captions, labels, index, glossary, table of contents, etc.) We will compare/contrast between fiction and non-fiction too. Word work We are taking a review week, so no new words. We will have a random 10 word quiz on Thursday on previously learned word wall words. We will review in our guided reading groups this week. Writer's Workshop No writing lessons this week. It's too busy! See below... Miscellaneous -We are celebrating Emmit's birthday today, and Stephen turns seven on Thursday -Valentine's Day is tomorrow. -Valentines Day is next Tuesday. We won't be having a big celebration or inviting parents in, but we will do some fun crafts for the kids in the afternoon. If you or your child chooses to send valentines for other students, make sure that you bring 23 (one for each student), and do not put names on them (takes forever to pass out). -International Fest is coming up this Saturday from 1-4 at the McCracken Gym. Please come out and show your support for our awesome and diverse community! Good music, dance and food too! -Conference sign ups are going to be closing soon. If you want to meet, please go to the Middleton website for instructions on how to sign up. -I'm beginning to collect paper towel tubes for a math scroll project for next unit.
